Beaten pedestrian seeks justice<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A pedestrian was beaten black and blue by a
\npolice officer last Friday, says the Legal Aid Institute (LBH).<\/p>\n
Rudolf Hemor was one of 30 pedestrians crossing the street
\ntogether in front of the Hyatt Hotel to the corner of the Wisma
\nNusantara building on Jl. M.H. Thamrin in Central Jakarta when he
\nwas abruptly pulled aside by a police officer and shoved in front
\nof Cap. Suwito Narto who then hit Rudolf on the face, Antara
\nreported.<\/p>\n
The crowd of pedestrians had waited in vain for 10 minutes for
\nthe light to change to green before they decided to beat the
\ntraffic light by crossing the street.<\/p>\n
Bewildered by the rough police treatment, Rudolf questioned
\nhis misdemeanor. Instead of receiving clarification, Rudolf was
\nkicked from behind and chased away, LBH said.<\/p>\n
Rudolf later reported the case to the Jaya Guntur city
\nmilitary garrison which suggested that Rudolf seek medical
\nattention at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital. He received eight
\nstitches around his mouth in the hospital.<\/p>\n
\"This act indicates a tendency for crime and brutality among
\nsome police officers,\" said Rita Serena Kalibonso and Saor
\nCharles of LBH.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman, Iman Haryatna, pledged to investigate
\nthe case.<\/p>\n
\"If the brutality charge turns out to be true, we'll take
\naction against the perpetrator,\" Iman said. (14)<\/p>",
