'Be more selective in hiring foreigners'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Even though the number of expatriates employed
\nby companies in Greater Jakarta is falling, firms are urged to
\nremain selective in hiring foreign workers, an official at the
\nJakarta office of the Manpower Ministry said yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Companies must continue improving their selection so as to
\nprevent expatriates from doing jobs which can be done by local
\nworkers,\" Freddy P. Tuamelly, head of the office, said.<\/p>\n
Freddy was quoted by Antara as saying that the number of
\nexpatriates working in Jakarta fell from 13,680 in the 1993\/1994
\nfiscal year to 12,404 in 1994\/1995, according to his office's
\ndata.<\/p>\n
\"It is impossible to totally prohibit expatriates from working
\nhere, but they should fill positions that local workers can't
\nhandle yet,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The presence of expatriates is still needed, especially to
\nhelp attract investment to Jakarta, he said. However, a company's
\nrecruitment procedures must be in line with existing regulations
\nor the company will face a penalty, he warned.<\/p>\n
Freddy said that his office will cooperate with related
\ninstitutions to intensify regulation of companies which employ
\nexpatriates.<\/p>\n
The increased scrutiny is intended to check the extent to
\nwhich employment procedures and regulations are being
\nimplemented, he said.<\/p>\n
He also urged companies operating in Greater Jakarta not to
\nemploy foreigners on tourist visas.<\/p>\n
\"If they want to hire them, the tourists should be asked to
\nreturn to their home countries before their employment proposals
\nare submitted to the government,\" he said. (hhr)<\/p>",
