Cigarette smuggling attempt foiled<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: Customs officials at Tanjung Perak port here foiled
\nan attempt on Tuesday to smuggle American brand Marlboro
\ncigarettes into Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The move meant that a potential loss of Rp 1.7 billion
\n(US$200,000) to the state was prevented, said local customs and
\nexcise office head Heryanto Budi Santoso.<\/p>\n
He said the confiscated, illegally imported cigarettes
\namounted to a container load comprising 920 cartons.<\/p>\n
The cigarettes had been shipped from China via Singapore
\nbefore arriving at Surabaya, East Java.<\/p>\n
"We seized them after discovering that the packing tapes of
\nthe cigarette were fake," he said.<\/p>\n
Budi said customs officials used ultraviolet light to
\ndetermine that the tapes were false.<\/p>\n
"We were also suspicious when we found the labels said the
\ncigarette were produced by a Marlboro company in Malang ... They
\ncame from China, so how could they have been produced in Malang?"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The seized cigarettes are currently being held in the port
\ncontainer terminal as evidence in an investigation, Budi added.
