Ba'asyir sentence demand stands<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Prosecutors reiterated their demand on Monday that
\nthe Central Jakarta District Court sentence Muslim cleric Abu
\nBakar Ba'asyir to 15 years in jail.<\/p>\n
Chief prosecutor Hasan Madani told the court evidence was
\nsolid to prove the defendant's guilt in subversion and violating
\nimmigration law, such that he deserved to remain in jail for 15
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Ba'asyir, who chairs the hard-line Muslim group Mujahidin
\nIndonesia Council (MMI), had denied accusations of plotting to
\nassassinate then vice president Megawati Soekarnoputri in 1999,
\nwhich the prosecutors said was aimed at toppling the legitimate
\ngovernment. He is also charged with manipulating counterfeiting?
\na passport while in exile in Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Presiding judge Mohammad Sholeh adjourned the trial until
\nWednesday. The judges are expected to announce the verdict next

JAKARTA: Coordinating Minister for Political and Security
\nAffairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on the Malaysian
\ngovernment on Monday not to grant asylum too readily to Aceh
\npeople.<\/p>\n
"Malaysia is our good neighbor that supports our national
\nintegrity and does not recognize the separatist movement in Aceh.
\nIt would be better if both countries could communicate over the
\nrecent problem," Susilo said after a Cabinet meeting.<\/p>\n
He was responding to the case of 232 Acehnese people arrested
\nby Malaysian authorities when they rallied in front of the UN
\nHigh Commissioner for Refugees in Kuala Lumpur to seek asylum
\nlast week. Some of them have agreed to go home.<\/p>\n
Susilo said the issue would be raised by President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri during her meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister
\nMahathir Mohamad this weekend on her visit to Kuala Lumpur. --JP<\/p>",
