'Baywatch', 'MTV' out for Ramadhan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Baywatch and MTV are two of the programs that
\nwill be dropped by local television stations because they could
\noffend Moslems as they begin their fasting ritual on Monday, the
\nstart of the holy Ramadhan month.<\/p>\n
"We're not taking any risks," Soraya Perucha, ANteve's
\nCorporate Communication manager, told The Jakarta Post yesterday.<\/p>\n
ANteve relays the highly popular MTV music video programs as
\nwell as its locally produced version Bursa Musik Indonesia. These
\nprograms will be replaced by local films and music programs with
\nreligious themes. The station is also dropping Prima Raga, the
\nmorning aerobic show.<\/p>\n
Soraya said some video music clips show eroticism and sadism,
\nor performers wearing outrageous clothes.<\/p>\n
RCTI says it is dropping Baywatch, which is normally aired on
\nSundays, and replacing it with a religious television drama. SCTV
\nis replacing the Indonesian drama serial Deru Debu with the
\nreligious television drama Hikayat Mengembara.<\/p>\n
"Although all our programs have already been censored by the
\nauthorities, we are still tightening up our selection for
\nRamadhan," Soraya said.<\/p>\n
In 1994, SCTV viewers protested when the station broadcast, on
\nthe first day of Ramadhan, a cooking program called Wok With Yan,
\nin which the host showed viewers how to prepare a pork dish.<\/p>\n
Members of the Film Censorship Institute (LSF) welcomed the
\ninitiative taken by the stations, although one of them, Masyuri
\nSyaid, wondered why the networks could not maintain such
\nvigilance all year round. (01)<\/p>",
