Batu Hijau is a 21st century mine that adopts a new paradigm
\nin environmental management and social responsibility.
\nBatu Hijau Mine is committed to environmental stewardship in all
\naspects of its operations starting from exploration, production
\nand even future closure.<\/p>\n
When conducting an exploration activity, PT NNT uses
\ntechnologies and procedures that are designed to minimize impacts
\nto the environment.," said Phil Brumit, General Manager
\nOperations PT NNT.. Drilling activities in a forest area, for an
\nexample, are carefully planned to ensure that only small portions
\nof the forest are cleared for drill rig pads.<\/p>\n
Drilling equipment are transported by helicopter therefore
\nland access that usually involves land clearing is minimized.
\nWhen an exploration project completes, the affected area will be
\nimmediately rehabilitated and planted with tress.<\/p>\n
When PT NNT's exploration project at Batu Hijau prospect was
\nsuccessful, it was followed by a feasibility study which assessed
\nwhether the deposit was economically and technically feasible and
\nmore importantly environmentally feasible. This study needed to
\nbe approved by the Government of Indonesia before further steps
\ncould be taken.<\/p>\n
Andal Study<\/p>\n
Once it was approved, the company then conducted an integrated
\nenvironmental impact study or Amdal to identify potential
\nenvironmental and social impacts of the projects and designed
\nmanagement plans to minimize those predicted impacts in a
\ndocument called RKL and RPL. The Amdal, RKL and RPL were approved
\nand implemented by PT NNT right from the construction of the
\nproject in 1997 and throughout the life of the mine.<\/p>\n
During operation, , PT NNT implements the environmental
\nmanagement and monitoring plans as described in Amdal study and
\nreported the performance to the Governments.<\/p>\n
Community Development<\/p>\n
On the social aspects, PT NNT is committed to maximize the
\npositive impacts of its operation through various programs that
\nbenefit local community. These include local recruitment policy,
\nlocal business initiative and local community development.
\nThrough these programs, local communities receive the highest
\nbenefits and values from the mine.<\/p>\n
PT NNT's performance in environmental management and community
\nprograms are communicated openly and transparently to the public
\nthrough an annual report 'Now & Beyond'. Plus, public is given
\nfull access to PT NNT's operational site for them to check and
\nassess the operation. In additional to mandatory inspection by
\nGovernment Inspectors, the provincial government of
\nWest Nusa Tenggara has also established an Independent Team to
\nmonitor and study PT NNT's operation to ensure that positive
\nimpacts are maximized and negative impacts are minimized.<\/p>\n
