Baton issuance protested<\/p>\n
BANDARLAMPUNG, Lampung: The recent issuance of batons to the
\nprovince's civil servants has drawn protests from a group called
\nthe Lampung People's Council.<\/p>\n
Idhan Januardana, the council's secretary-general, said the
\npolicy of equipping the civil servants with batons to anticipate
\nlarge protests \"demonstrates a true example of arrogance of power
\nusing a repressive approach\".<\/p>\n
Such an approach could make things worse, Idhan said in a
\nstatement quoted by Antara on Friday.<\/p>\n
The council represents a number of \"proreform groups\".<\/p>\n
He said the policy was in response to riots which occurred in
\nthe province on Aug. 25 and Aug. 26, which led to windows being
\nshattered at the governor's office. Instead of a repressive
\nreaction, he argued that the government should be looking into
\nwhy so many people became upset.<\/p>\n
The fact that people came to the governor's office and the
\ncouncil still shows people have some trust in these institutions,
\nIdhan said.<\/p>",
