        "content": "<p>The Jambi Regional Police, through the Muara Jambi Police Criminal\nInvestigation Unit, have responded swiftly to community reports\nregarding the rise of illegal gold mining (PETI) in the Batanghari River\nBasin. These illegal activities are reported to have increased alongside\nthe shallowing of the river caused by a long drought over the past two\nmonths.<\/p>\n<p>One of the primary focus areas for enforcement is the Sekernan\nDistrict in Muarojambi Regency. In this location, illegal miners operate\nusing plastic drum rafts and small wooden boats known as \u2018pompong\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It has been quite a long time, and it is becoming more frequent\nsince the Batangkeri river water receded. Miners use suction machines\n(dompeng) to extract material from the riverbed, which is then poured\ninto filters (asbuk) on their boats,\u2019 stated a resident, who expressed\nconcern that the use of chemicals in these illegal mining activities\ncould damage fish farming in the Muarojambi area.<\/p>\n<p>Following these concerns, the Muara Jambi Police conducted an\nenforcement operation on Thursday (10\/9). Although the perpetrators\nmanaged to flee when officers arrived, the Muara Jambi Police Criminal\nInvestigation Team managed to secure approximately 10 wooden boats and\nillegal mining machinery left at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Muara Jambi Police Chief AKBP Bayu Noormansyah, through Criminal\nInvestigation Unit Head AKP M. Robby Nizar, confirmed the enforcement\noperation in the Batanghari River Basin area.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018That is correct. When we descended to the location with several\nofficers from the Sekernan Police Sub-district, we found a number of\nwooden boats suspected of being used for illegal gold mining. Following\nThursday\u2019s enforcement, we hope that illegal mining activities will\ncease, including in other areas within the jurisdiction of the Muara\nJambi Police,\u2019 Robby Nizar told Media Indonesia on Saturday (12\/9).<\/p>\n<p>Nizar emphasised that, in addition to being illegal, these mining\nactivities have a detrimental impact on environmental sustainability,\nparticularly by damaging the water quality of the Batanghari River,\nwhich serves as a vital life source for the community.<\/p>\n<p>According to records, illegal gold mining activities in Jambi\nProvince are currently widespread across six regencies: Merangin,\nKerinci, Bungo, Tebo, Sarolangun, and Batanghari.<\/p>\n<p>The methods used vary, ranging from motorised suction rafts to the\nuse of heavy excavators in several areas, which are suspected to be\nfunded by large-scale financiers.<\/p>",
