Batam rocked by mysterious murders<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Mysterious murders are on the increase on the
\nindustrial island of Batam, where at least six people have been
\nkilled by unidentified assailants since January, local police
\nsaid on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The killers had since disappeared and were still at large.<\/p>\n
Barelang Police chief Sr. Comr. Suhartono said he would
\ncontinue to work hard to capture the killers. \"The problem is
\nthat witnesses who have information on the cases refuse to help
\nus in the investigation.\"<\/p>\n
It is not clear whether the murders are linked. The victims
\ninclude two elementary school-aged girls, a ship's captain and an
\nIndonesian employee working for a Japanese company.<\/p>\n
The police's failure to arrest the murderers has been
\ncriticized by local legislators and activists.<\/p>\n
Deputy speaker of the Batam legislative council Muhammad Nabil
\nsaid the local police must be able to boost their performance
\nafter the administration had allocated police an extra Rp 1
