Batam mayor unsure of Ramadhan closures<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Batam Mayor Nyat Kadir said on Tuesday he was
\nstill undecided about ordering entertainment centers on the
\nisland to close during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadhan.<\/p>\n
\"We are still considering the demand from Islamic
\norganizations to close these places during Ramadhan. We have to
\nconsider the fate of the thousands of people who work in such
\nplaces,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Nyat Kadir said that last year his office was powerless to
\ntake action when entertainment centers ignored an operational
\nban.<\/p>\n
There are currently 70 entertainment centers on the island,
\nemploying some 3,000 people.<\/p>\n
\"We are only asking them to stop their operations for 30 days.
\nWe don't think they will suffer much,\" Azari Abas, chairman of
\nthe Batam chapter of Indonesia Ulemas Council, said.<\/p>\n
Bambang Yulianto, regional coordinator of the Indonesian Union
\nfor Labor Welfare, said he hoped the mayoralty administration and
\nIslamic organizations would consider the human impact of ordering
\na closure.<\/p>\n
\"It would have a severe impact on the wives and children of
\nthousands of people who work at places like karaoke lounges and
\nmassage parlors,\" he said. --JP<\/p>",
