Batam industrial forest blockaded<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: The development of an industrial forest on the
\nisland was halted when hundreds of locals blockaded the location
\nafter PT Barelang Woods Industry (BWI), the developer, apparently
\nfailed to pay compensation for the land appropriated for the
\nproject.<\/p>\n
\"We do not know when the project will resume because a mob
\nthat claims the industrial area is theirs is blocking the road to
\nthe project,\" Antara quoted Edy, president of BWI, as saying here
\non Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said the blockade started in November and all workers
\nemployed in the project had been forced to leave by the
\nprotesters.<\/p>\n
The 100-hectare, Rp 800 billion project belonging to a
\nSingaporean investor meets all conditions required by the Batam
\nIndustrial Development Authority (BIDA).<\/p>\n
He called on BIDA and security authorities to help settle the
\nland dispute, saying the company had obtained the land from BIDA.<\/p>\n
\"The Singaporean investor has asked law enforcers and BIDA for
\nassurances of legal certainty so that the project can resume,\" he
\nsaid, citing the investor had already invested Rp 20 billion in

Raha remains tense<\/p>\n
RAHA, Southeast Sulawesi: The situation in the Southeast
\nSulawesi town of Raha remains tense following bloody clashes
\nbetween two rival groups in the city.<\/p>\n
Traffic on main roads in the city was nonexistent on Saturday,
\nstores remained closed and most residents stayed at home for fear
\nof fresh clashes.<\/p>\n
The clashes occurred when dozens of supporters of outgoing
\nRegent Ridwan confronted Zainul, who claimed Ridwan's senior high
\nschool diploma was fake, and physically attacked him and his
\nsupporters. Dozens of people were injured and many remain
\nhospitalized.<\/p>\n
Law No. 25\/1999 on regional autonomy requires both governors
\nand regents to be holders of senior high school diplomas at the
\nvery least.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. Alimuddin Tinulu, chief of the Muna Police,
\nconfirmed that the clashes occurred but said the cause was still
\nbeing investigated.<\/p>\n
He said he had deployed two platoons of security personnel to
\nrestore security and order in the town.<\/p>\n
Illiteracy rate high in Bojonegoro<\/p>\n
BOJONEGORO: The illiteracy rate in the East Java regency of
\nBojonegoro is as high as 25 percent, with 312,000 of the 1.2
\nmillion people in the regency not attending school.<\/p>\n
\"A long time is needed to fight illiteracy since local
\npeople's awareness of education is low,\" Sudjud, chief of the
\nlocal education office, said here on Saturday.<\/p>\n
He said illiteracy could be found both in rural and urban
\nareas, adding that a majority of illiterate people lived in
\nforested areas in Malo, Temayang, Dander and Kasiman
\nsubdistricts, far from Bojonegoro town.<\/p>\n
He said his office had launched a special education program to
\nteach people to read and instill a love of reading among them in

Stepfather arrested for rape<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: The police have arrested 40-year-old DH, a
\nconstruction worker, on charges of raping his 16-year-old
\nstepdaughter.<\/p>\n
Adj. Comr. Jairusi, chief of the Astana Anyar Police, said
\nover the weekend the suspect had been apprehended at a friend's
\nhouse in Majalaya in Bandung regency.<\/p>\n
\"The suspect admitted his wrongdoing and he went into hiding
\nbecause he was confused about his stepdaughter's pregnancy,\" said
\nJairusi.<\/p>\n
According to the suspect's stepdaughter, she was raped at
\nknifepoint six months ago.<\/p>\n
\"I reported the case to the police after he (the suspect)
\nescaped and I was left alone at home,\" she said, saying her

Divorce rate in Cirebon soars<\/p>\n
CIREBON: The divorce rate has escalated in Cirebon, with 3,178
\ndivorces registered at the Cirebon religious court in 2001.<\/p>\n
According to data at the religious court, 40 percent of the
\ndivorce cases were mostly due to economic reasons while the
\nremaining 60 percent were caused by disharmony, polygamy and
\nother noneconomical factors.<\/p>\n
A majority of the wives filed for divorce after their husbands
\nfailed to financially support them and their children.<\/p>\n
Sulaiman, a clerk of the religious court, said only a small
\nnumber of marital problems were solved out of court.<\/p>\n
He said another factor that contributed to the high divorce
\nrate was the fact that many people married at a young age, as
\nshown by the majority of the divorced couples being aged between
\n16 and 20.<\/p>\n
He called on parents to educate their children on marriage and

Makassar Police pick up gun package suspect<\/p>\n
MAKASSAR, South Sulawesi: The Makassar City Police have sent
\ntwo detectives to Palu in Central Sulawesi to collect Jein Kaja,
\nthe main suspect in the recently foiled shipment of guns and
\nexplosive equipment to restive Poso.<\/p>\n
Sr. Comr. Amin Saleh, chief of the city police, said the
\nsuspect, who is in custody at the Palu Police station, would be
\ninvestigated in the city because his offense was committed here.<\/p>\n
He said the suspect was a reporter at a print media in the
\ncity and the police wanted him to reveal the source of the guns
\nand what they were to be used for in Poso.<\/p>\n
The Palu Police are also investigating three suspects in
\nconnection to the recent bombing of four churches in the city.<\/p>\n
Security authorities have asked all warring factions in Poso
\nto surrender their guns and ammunition in an endeavor to end the
\nprolonged conflict. Warring factions in Poso signed a peace
\nagreement in Malino early in December to end the conflict.
