        "content": "<p>Batam hard pressed to list expatriates<\/p>\n<p>BATAM: The local manpower office is encountering difficulties<br>\nin tracing illegal foreign workers on the tiny island due to the<br>\nreluctance of many companies to release information and the<br>\nshortage of its own personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\"Worst of all, most of the illegal foreign workers at many<br>\nbusinesses here try to run and hide when our staff arrive at<br>\ntheir offices for a raid,\" head of Batam's manpower office<br>\nSulaiman Yusuf said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that data on legal foreign workers differed between<br>\nhis office and the local immigration office.<\/p>\n<p>His office recorded a total of 1,415 licensed foreign workers<br>\nin Batam, but immigration records showed 2,030, mostly citizens<br>\nof neighboring Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>There is no precise estimate on the number of illegal foreign<br>\nworkers, Sulaiman said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that most of the illegals worked in temporary<br>\npositions, such as managers and consultants, at many companies.<\/p>\n<p>Aliens found guilty of violating immigration regulations could<br>\nface three months in jail, Antara said.<\/p>",
