Batak people celebrate Independence Day<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Batak people living in the greater Jakarta area
\nhave organized several cultural activities to take place over two
\ndays, starting today, celebrating the 50th anniversary of
\nIndonesia's independence.<\/p>\n
Emil Salim, chairman of the national committee for the 50th
\nAnniversary of Indonesia, told a recent press conference at Le
\nMeridien Hotel that the committee fully supported the activities
\nbecause preserving the culture of each ethnic tribe is among the
\nmain concerns of the government.<\/p>\n
The Batak ethnic group is native to the North Sumatra
\nProvince.<\/p>\n
He added that several other ethnic groups across the country
\nare also going to stage similar activities, where they will
\nexhibit and reflect on the changes experienced by their own
\nculture throughout Indonesia's first fifty years of independence.<\/p>\n
\"We hope that through the activities we can record the peak
\nelements of each ethnic group and develop them after that,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
John B. Pasaribu, chairman of Horas Indonesia -- the Batak
\nfestival's committee name -- said the cultural activities to be
\nperformed by the Batak people include an arts exhibition, which
\nwill be held from 10 a.m. through to the evening, today and
\ntomorrow; Batak traditional games, to be staged today only, from
\n10 a.m through to the evening; a seminar on Batak culture, to be
\nheld today from 10 p.m through to the evening; and a dance and
\nmusic show to be staged tomorrow from 7 p.m till midnight.<\/p>\n
All activities will be held at the Jakarta Convention Center,
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The seminar will involve 40 experts on Batak culture from
\nacross the country, while the dance and music show will involve
\nabout 200 artists and be attended by 6,000 guests. (jsk)<\/p>",
