Bassra's rejection<\/p>\n
The Association of Ulemas of Religious Schools in Madura Badan
\nSilaturahmi Ulama Pesantren Madura (Bassra) finally issued a
\nstatement rejecting a request from the Minister of Research and
\nTechnology\/Chairman of the Board for Study and Application of
\nTechnology (BPPT), B.J. Habibie, to put their signatures on a
\ndeclaration accepting industrialization on Madura.<\/p>\n
The Bassra decision came in the wake of a decision of
\nHabibie ... which in essence states that construction of a bridge
\nlinking Surabaya with Madura would begin in April next year,
\nfollowed by the industrialization of the area.<\/p>\n
Why did Habibie find it necessary to ask the Bassra ulemas
\n(Moslem religious leaders) to issue a statement? Perhaps only
\nHabibie knows the precise answer. In light of past events, it
\nmight be that Habibie assumes that the Madurans, the ulemas in
\nparticular, reject the idea of the construction of such a bridge
\nbetween Surabaya and Madura as well as the industrialization
\nplans. However, as might be deducted from various statements that
\nhave been made by Bassra, neither the people of Madura nor its
\nulemas object to industrialization. What they want is that any
\nsuch industrialization plans be executed not for the mere sake of
\nindustrialization by itself, but that it serve the benefit of the
\npeople of the area.<\/p>\n
We do not know what the eventual solution of the problem will
\nbe. However, we would like to remind everybody that the proposed
\nbridge and the industrialization plans could affect the fate of
\nmany people.<\/p>\n
