Basofi better known as singer<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The flamboyant Basofi Soedirman found out yesterday
\nthat most local people knew him as a dangdut folk singer rather
\nthan as their governor.<\/p>\n
While visiting a polling station near the city, he was treated
\nlike a pop star. Children, youths and mothers fought to get close
\nto him.<\/p>\n
Some wanted to shake hands and others asked him for
\nautographs. And he did not mind at all, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
When asked who Basofi was, a middle-aged woman promptly
\nreplied, \"That's Basofi the dangdut (singer). I have a cassette
\nof his latest album.\"<\/p>\n
Smiling, Basofi turned to the woman and asked, \"Which song do
\nyou like best?\"<\/p>\n
\"Fatamorgana, mister,\" she said with a thick Madurese accent.<\/p>\n
Basofi seemed impressed by the conversation. But on his way
\nhome by bus, he complained: \"Why do people know me as a dangdut
\nsinger rather than as a governor?\"<\/p>\n
Dangdut is highly popular among the poor, but is often sneered
