Baskoni the real suspect, police finally say<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police finally announced yesterday that
\nBaskoni Wahab, a 63-year-old high school teacher who has been in
\npolice custody for four days, is the only suspect in the murder
\nof a senior police officer in East Jakarta last week.<\/p>\n
\"Now we have come to the final conclusion that he is the only
\nsuspect based on the confession made by him as well as
\ninformation from witnesses and all evidence available,\" head of
\nthe General Crime Section of the City Police Headquarters Lt.
\nCol. Gories Mere told reporters.<\/p>\n
Since the arrest of Baskoni, who is also a manager of an
\neducational foundation, on Tuesday morning, none of the city
\npolice officers had been willing to make a formal statement on
\nthe results of the interrogation of the suspect, giving rise to
\nspeculations that he was not the real murderer.<\/p>\n
Mere, who was directly involved in the investigation, said
\nthat Baskoni is the single suspect in the fatal stabbing of the
\nnewly-appointed head of the Pademangan police precinct, Maj.
\nNoenang Kohar, 38, who was wearing civilian clothes when the
\nincident took place last Friday.<\/p>\n
The killing, he said, was a spontaneous act and not
\npremeditated as many had presumed. He said it was began after a
\nminor accident between a bajaj (a small three-wheeled transport
\nvehicle) Baskoni rode in and the Daihatsu Taft jeep driven by
\nNoenang.<\/p>\n
Mere added, however, that there were still some discrepancies
\nbetween the confession made by Baskoni and the statement of the
\nbajaj driver, who is the key witness in the case.<\/p>\n
He also confirmed that police detectives had earlier
\napprehended the wrong person, identified as Iwan, whom they
\nthought was the bajaj driver.<\/p>\n
He said that the real driver, identified as Warkam, was found
\non Wednesday in Indramayu, West Java.<\/p>\n
Mere quoted Warkam as saying that Baskoni swore at Noenang,
\ncalling him \"a dog and pig\" when the police officer's jeep
\nbrushed against the bajaj and that Baskoni told Warkam to
\ncontinue driving when Noenang asked them to stop.<\/p>\n
After blocking the path of the bajaj, Noenang quickly got out
\nof his car and confronted Baskoni, Mere quoted the key witness as
\ntelling him.<\/p>\n
\"The bajaj driver confessed that he didn't know or hear what
\nwas happening between the two until he saw Noenang fall down
\nbleeding.\"<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Baskoni's lawyers from Jakarta's Legal Aid
\nInstitute earlier quoted their client as saying during police
\nquestioning that the crash occurred after the Taft jeep tried to
\npass the bajaj on the left side -- a violation of the traffic
\nlaw.<\/p>\n
When the accident occurred, Baskoni shouted obscene words at
\nNoenang which might have incurred the wrath of the officer who
\nthen chased after the small vehicle and stopped it, the lawyers
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Baskoni said Noenang rushed from his car and slapped his face.
\nHe then got out of the bajaj and demanded to know why Noenang had
\nslapped him. An infuriated Noenang allegedly told Baskoni that he
\nwas offended by Baskoni's obscenities.<\/p>\n
Apparently Noenang moved to slap Baskoni again, but Baskoni
\nquickly took out a knife and stabbed the unsuspecting officer in
\nthe left side of his chest, said the lawyers, adding that Baskoni
\nwas not aware that the victim was a police officer. (bsr)<\/p>",
