Basic problems untouched<\/p>\n
After a long and uncertain wait, the deregulation measures
\nthat are to be the vanguard of economic efficiency and
\nimprovement have been announced, even though the basic problems
\nthat are encumbering the Indonesian economy have been left
\nuntouched.<\/p>\n
In short, the present deregulation measures do not reflect the
\ngovernment's intent to curb the monopolies and oligopolies which
\nhave so far hampered the growth of the Indonesian economy and
\nthereby the attainment of the goals delineated in our Development
\nTrilogy. This creates the impression that the aims specified in
\nour Broad Outline of State Policy (GHBN) are mere rhetoric and
\nthat the solutions offered do not touch on the basic problems
\nthat beset our national economy.<\/p>\n
Moreover, our efforts to attain efficiency cannot be separated
\nfrom the eradication of corruption and collusion. Minister of
\nTransmigration Siswono Yudohusodo said as long as there is no
\nregulation that requires officials to report their personal
\nwealth before they assume their posts and afterward, all efforts
\nto achieve efficiency through the eradication of corruption will
\nbe in vain. This means that deregulation efforts should be all-
\nembracing and on target.<\/p>\n
