Barter trade<\/p>\n
The present hardships, unemployment, skyrocketing prices of
\nbasic commodities as the result of the monetary crisis would not
\nhave happened if the exchange rate for the rupiah against U.S.
\ndollar had not depreciated to such low level. Because the rupiah
\nis so influenced by the U.S. dollar, the higher the demand for
\nthe dollar, the lower the value of the rupiah will become.<\/p>\n
I vividly remember that in 1951 there were two blocks of
\ncurrencies -- the pound sterling and the U.S. dollar. The most
\nideal situation would be, for example, to use pounds sterling for
\ntransactions with Europe, dollars for the U.S. and yen for Japan
\nand the Asian region.<\/p>\n
As matters stand now, it is very difficult for an Indonesian
\nimporter to do business. It was reported recently that in Sydney,
\nAustralia, there were talks on barter trade between Australia and
\nIndonesia. For example, Australia could export cattle to
\nIndonesia and in reciprocation Indonesia would pay for it with
\npalm oil, timber, plywood, etc.<\/p>\n
This is not a bad idea.<\/p>\n
