Bapindo executives trade accusations in court<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The trials of two men involved in the fraud
\namounting to losses of Rp 1.3 trillion ($620 million) at Bank
\nPembangunan Indonesia are turning into bouts of finger pointing
\nbetween the executives of the government bank who are implicated
\nin the scandal.<\/p>\n
Maman Suparman, on trial for allegedly helping businessman
\nEddy Tansil to secure loans illegally, told the court yesterday
\nthat he informed the bank's head office of every single
\ntransaction he carried out on the Tansil loans when he was deputy
\nmanager of the bank's Jakarta branch.<\/p>\n
Apip Sahabuddin, from the head office's banking services
\ndivision, also insisted that he passed all the information from
\nMaman on to the board of directors.<\/p>\n
Their allegations contrast sharply with the testimony given by
\nformer Bapindo directors, who have said that they only became
\naware something was wrong with the Tansil loans in April 1992,
\nnearly three years after the first transaction.<\/p>\n
Maman's alleged role was allowing the businessman to cash in
\non $174 million, a service the prosecution says Tansil paid
\nhandsomely for.<\/p>\n
Apip told the South Jakarta District Court that based on all
\nthe information he passed to the directors, they must have known
\nabout some irregularities in three Tansil transactions earlier
\nthan April 1992.<\/p>\n
Apip said the directors never took any disciplinary action
\nagainst the branch executives for the series of violations in the
\nissuance of the Tansil loans.<\/p>\n
Asked why did the directors failed to react, Apip said he
\nbelieved there was "outside influence." He did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
Apip admitted that he received Rp 100 million ($46,000) from
\nTansil, and said that when he asked if the others were involved
\nin fixing the loans, Tansil responded by saying that he had taken
\ncare of them.<\/p>\n
Apip however said he did not know whether this meant that
\nMaman was also receiving payments from Tansil.<\/p>\n
Sudomo<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Achmad Marzuki, Bapindo's current president,
\ntestified that he paid a visit to Sudomo, the chairman of the
\nSupreme Advisory Council who recommended Tansil to the bank, in
\nDecember 1993 to ask for help in compelling Tansil to pay the
\nmoney back.<\/p>\n
Sudomo suggested that Bapindo help Tansil restructure his
\nloans and allow his petrochemical projects to be completed.<\/p>\n
Indriana Tansil, Tansil's wife, said that she recalled signing
\nchecks amounting to Rp 100 million for Apip Sahabuddin and Rp 175
\nmillion for Riswanto Hadi, another head office executive.<\/p>\n
Indriana said she did not know what the checks were for when
\nshe signed them at Tansil's request.<\/p>\n
She added that she did not know whether Tansil also paid any
\nmoney to Maman.<\/p>\n
The court also heard the testimony of Komariah, Maman's wife,
\nbehind closed doors.<\/p>\n
Another woman, Mustriani, testified that she sold Maman a
\nhouse in the plush Pulomas residential area in East Jakarta for
\nRp 365 million in 1991. (05)<\/p>",
