Banyuwangi's regent resigns<\/p>\n
Banyuwangi Regent, T. Purnomo Sidik has finally resigned from
\nhis post. He stepped down after an organization known as the
\nGroup of 101 insisted that he relinquish the position. The demand
\nwas part of a package deal proposed to resolve the mysterious
\nmass killings of alleged black magic practitioners in East Java
\nearly this year.<\/p>\n
We understand Purnomo Sidik's willingness to resign to be in
\nresponse to the fact that locals lost confidence in his
\nleadership and withdrew support. The regent was widely perceived
\nas incapable of solving the killings. However, some people
\nbelieved he had the capacity to resolve the horror in which more
\nthan a hundred people were killed. They also suspected his
\ninvolvement in the incidents.<\/p>\n
The regent's decision to resign, at the urging of the regional
\nlegislature, is an act that is far more honorable and far more
\nconstitutional than if he were forced to so under public
\npressure. Furthermore, waiting for the latter to happen would
\nprovide a dangerous precedent, since this kind of action could
\nlead to the emergence of people's courts.<\/p>\n
