Banyumas Islam sect banned<\/p>\n
BANYUMAS, Central Java (JP): The local government has banned
\nan Islamic sect that is believed responsible for the disappearance
\nof 11 of its member families.<\/p>\n
The local prosecutor's office said in its decree banning the
\nIslam Sejati, or "Pure Islam", that the sect's teachings may
\n"threaten national unity."<\/p>\n
Islam Sejati, according to Abdul Gafar Kamba, chief of the
\nlocal prosecutor's office, believes that someone can have their
\nsins forgiven by God simply by giving its leader Rp 250,000
\n(about US$113) in cash.<\/p>\n
"This is obvious deception," Gafar was quoted as saying by
\nAntara, which did not name the sect leader.<\/p>\n
The sect also teaches its members that the holy Koran does not
\nneed not be practiced and that, instead, it is enough just to
\n"understand" it. It also encourages them to exchange wives.<\/p>\n
In its politics teachings, it is stated that the red-white
\nnational flag can be replaced any time, Gafar said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
"Such misleading dogma will undoubtedly destroy the peaceful
\nco-existence of citizens from different religious backgrounds,"
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The Central Java provincial prosecutors office has ordered
\nBanyumas authorities to track down 11 of the 35 sect families
\nthat reportedly went missing after a sect ritual.<\/p>\n
Banyumas authorities have threatened to take tough action
\nagainst sect members who defy the ban, which has been strongly
\nsupported by the local chapter of the Indonesian Ulemas Council.
