        "content": "<p>Banten province?<\/p>\n<p>From Rakyat Merdeka<\/p>\n<p>There are intensified demands in the Banten community to<br>\nseparate from West Java province. The people of the regency have<br>\nbecome more aggressive in stating their aims; the Forum of the<br>\nBantenese Students Movement (Forban) warned the government,<br>\nduring a demonstration held at the House of Representatives on<br>\nDec. 7, 1999, that \"Banten must be made a province in the year<br>\n2000 at the latest\" (Rakyat Merdeka, Dec. 8)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, everybody has the right to express oneself. However,<br>\nfor Banten to become a province many factors and aspects must be<br>\ntaken into account -- its geographical setting, judicial status,<br>\nsociological, cultural as well as historical background, etc.<br>\nThe negative implications for the West Java community also must<br>\nbe considered.<\/p>\n<p>Cirebon regency once wanted to become a province. In course of<br>\ntime, the demand receded and is no longer heard.<\/p>\n<p>Former minister of population and environment Dr. Emil Salim<br>\nhad a concept that Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi (BOTABEK) would be<br>\ntransformed into a self-administered region, with a governor<br>\npossessing the ministerial capacity as its head. It would mean<br>\nthat the BOTABEK region was no longer part of West Java province.<br>\nThe concept was not realized. The more realistic idea was to<br>\ninclude the BOTABEK region in the Jakarta metropolitan<br>\nadministration.<\/p>\n<p>Should all these separatist ideas become a reality what would<br>\nbe left for West Java province? The province would dissolve. How<br>\ntragic!<\/p>\n<p>If the past authoritarian-style of the central government<br>\n(i.e. a product of president Soeharto's regime) is behind the<br>\nidea of separation, Bantenese elders may hold a dialog and<br>\ndeliberate on the matters.
