Banten gubernatorial election protested<\/p>\n
SERANG, Banten: More than 500 people of The Oppressed Group
\n(Keras) and of the Banten Care Society Alliance (Ampibi) staged a
\ndemonstration in the city on Monday, demanding the Banten
\nprovincial legislative council halt the ongoing gubernatorial
\nelection.<\/p>\n
The demonstrators, who came from Tangerang, Lebak, Pandeglang
\nand the city, also demanded Dharmono K. Lawi, chairman of the
\nprovincial legislature and 15 legislators who were transferred
\nfrom the West Java provincial legislature, step down because they
\ndid not represent the people of Banten.<\/p>\n
Mahdi Ardiyansyah, coordinator of Keras, said the
\ngubernatorial election had to be canceled because all candidates
\nwere determined not to abide by official procedure.<\/p>\n
At the same time, 500 Banten defenders wearing black uniforms
\nstaged a counter-demonstration, demanding the provincial
\nlegislature speed up the gubernatorial election.<\/p>\n
The demonstrations forced security personnel to be on full
\nalert to avoid clashes between the two groups of demonstrators.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. Jati Wiyono, chief of Serang Police precinct,
\nsaid he had asked coordinators of the two groups to avoid
\nviolence between their supporters.<\/p>\n
\"The coordinators of the two sides should take account of
\nclashes among their supporters,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The provincial legislature has picked three from ten pairs of
\ncandidates for governor and deputy governor, who are to be
\nelected in the near future.<\/p>\n
The three pairs of candidates were Ace Suhaidi\/Mamas, Djoko
\nMunandar\/Atut Chosiah and Herman Haeruman\/Ade Sudirman. --Antara<\/p>",
