Bantar Gebang scavengers find rotten meat<\/p>\n
Dozens of scavengers at Bantar Gebang dump in Bekasi municipality
\nfound tons of rotten meat on Sunday, which was unloaded from two
\ncontainer trucks.<\/p>\n
"We suspect that the trucks came from Tanjung Priok Port in
\nNorth Jakarta," Nurdin, head of Bantar Gebang Scavengers
\nCommunity, was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
On Sunday morning, dozens of scavengers were combing through
\ngarbage, looking for items that could be recycled, in zone IV of
\nthe dump when they noticed a horrible stench, other than the
\nusual smell of rotting garbage.<\/p>\n
They tracked down the putrid smell until they found chunks of
\nrotten meat scattered around the zone.<\/p>\n
Some scavengers reported their finding to Bantar Gebang Police
\nwho immediately sent some officers to the scene.<\/p>\n
Bantar Gebang Police chief Adj. Comr. Didik Soekamto said that
\nhe suspected the meat came from container trucks from Tanjung
\nPriok. "But we can't calculate the exact amount of the rotten
\nmeat yet."<\/p>\n
"I have instructed my officers and asked help from local
\nauthorities to have the rotten meat buried this afternoon," he
\nsaid on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He added that Bantar Gebang Police would look into the
\npossibility that the meat might have been illegally imported.<\/p>\n
Information gathered from witnesses at the scene revealed that
\nsix container trucks had entered the dump in the early hours of
\nSunday.<\/p>\n
The witnesses said that four of the six trucks left the dump
\nalmost immediately, while the other two departed later.<\/p>\n
The scavengers suspected the four container trucks did not
\nunload the contents as they were afraid of drawing too much
\nattention.<\/p>\n
Container trucks would indeed draw the attention of locals as
\nusually only dump trucks enter the site, which is used by the
\nJakarta administration to dump 6,000 tons of trash daily. -- JP<\/p>",
