Bantar Gebang dumpsite closure<\/p>\n

Whoever expected that Bekasi's mayor would have the guts to
\nstand up to Jakarta's governor Sutiyoso, who is physically bigger
\nthan he. Hats off to Bekasi mayor Nonon Sonthanie, who has
\nsucceeded in crushing the arrogance of Jakarta's city
\nadministration, which -- like it or not -- has been ruled by
\n\"warlords\".<\/p>\n
Nonon Sonthanie's bravery in closing the final dumpsite (TPA)
\nin Bantar Gebang on Dec. 10 was a courageous action to break the
\npower of the Jakarta city administration's senior officials, who
\nhave often given the impression of belittling other suburban
\nareas of Jakarta (Bogor, Tangerang and Bekasi).<\/p>\n
Those senior officials of the Jakarta city administration
\nusually go about as if Jakarta were a rich city and other areas
\nwere its poor neighbors, which could be treated as it wished and
\nwhich always had to take whatever compensation the Jakarta city
\nadministration would offer them.<\/p>\n
In fact, the philosophy, \"Everything can be arranged\" no
\nlonger prevails, at least in the closure of Bantar Gebang dumping
\nsite.<\/p>\n
The measure taken by Bekasi mayor has, apparently, been
\nfollowed by Bogor and Tangerang. They dared to refuse Governor
\nSutiyoso's wish to dump Jakarta's garbage in those two regions.
\nIt's really ironic. When Lebaran is drawing near, people
\ngenerally receive parcels containing delicious food and beverages
\nbut the Jakarta administration has got a present of garbage
\npiling up everywhere, a mountain of trash that will spoil the
\ncity's environment. Garbage is increasingly troublesome,
\nespecially if it continues to rain in the capital city.<\/p>\n
The governor of Jakarta and his staff should, therefore,
\nreflect on this matter and open their minds to improve their
\nperformance. They should lose their arrogance and never attempt
\nto underestimate other regions. Let them learn a lesson from the
\nincident!<\/p>\n
