        "content": "<p>Banks to help textile producers<\/p>\n<p>Zakki Hakim, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Bank Rakyat Indonesia and Bank Danamon have agreed with the<br>\nMinistry of Industry and Trade to provide help for troubled<br>\nsarong and batik producers in Pekalongan, Central Java, and in<br>\nMajalaya, West Java.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement was reached during a meeting at the ministry on<br>\nFriday, said director general for domestic trade Rifana Erni.<\/p>\n<p>She was unable as yet to provide details as the matter was to<br>\nbe further discussed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>However, one short-term measure to aid the sarong and batik<br>\nproducers would be to encourage state-owned companies to purchase<br>\nthe products.<\/p>\n<p>The banks could provide loans to finance such transactions.<\/p>\n<p>Rifana said that state-sponsored investment financing company<br>\nPermodalan Nasional Madani had also agreed to help.<\/p>\n<p>The sarong and batik producers have found themselves in<br>\nserious trouble in marketing their products after the Tanah Abang<br>\nmarket, the main domestic market and export channel for textile<br>\nproducts, was destroyed by fire last month.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are some 14 million sarongs worth about Rp<br>\n175 billion (US$19.70 million) piled up in Majalaya and<br>\nPekalongan.<\/p>\n<p>Rifana earlier said that the ministry would also help the<br>\nsarong and batik producers open up new domestic markets in<br>\nSumatra and South Sulawesi.<\/p>",
