        "content": "<p>Banks join loan program<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Five private local banks have joined the loan<br>\nportfolio guarantee (LPG) program aimed at improving small<br>\nbusinesses&apos; credit provisions.<\/p>\n<p>The five banks -- PT Bank Umum Nasional, Bank Niaga, Pan<br>\nIndonesia Bank (PANIN), Bank Dahanutama and Bank NISP -- are<br>\ncurrently participating in a five-day workshop on micro-<br>\nenterprises and small business finance, sponsored by the United<br>\nStates Agency for International Development (USAID).<\/p>\n<p>The USAID-sanctioned LPG program, which last year guaranteed a<br>\nloan portfolio of US$11.5 million, covers up to 50 percent of a<br>\nparticipating bank&apos;s net losses on a loan principal, should the<br>\nqualified borrowers default.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In this way, the bank&apos;s risk is reduced but not eliminated,&quot;<br>\nsaid a statement released at yesterday&apos;s workshop opening.
