        "content": "<p>Banks asked to take over loans<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State Minister of Public Housing Akbar Tandjung<br>\ncalled on sound banks yesterday to take over housing loans<br>\nextended by dissolved banks.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar said liquidation teams should help transfer housing<br>\nloans from the dissolved banks to other banks, especially banks<br>\nspecializing in housing loans, to calm consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\"I ask liquidation teams to take notice of those who have<br>\ncommitted to buying houses or who have even paid down payments,\"<br>\nAkbar said.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that Bank Harapan Santosa (BHS) and Bank Guna<br>\nInternasional, two of the 16 closed banks, had been active in<br>\nextending housing loans.<\/p>\n<p>The two banks, both controlled by the Harapan Group, had<br>\nfinanced the construction of three housing estates, namely Serang<br>\nIndah, Tangerang Bumi Indah and Kota Tenjo -- all in Greater<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Bank Guna had disbursed housing loans for 2,812 low-cost homes<br>\nin Kota Tenjo, 971 homes in Serang Indah and 1,170 homes in Bumi<br>\nIndah.<\/p>\n<p>BHS had given out loans for 1,425 houses in Bumi Indah.<\/p>\n<p>Akbar said the Tenjo area, on the border of Serang and Bogor<br>\nin West Java, had been designated a residential area, especially<br>\nfor middle and lower-income people working in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had consulted with the Indonesian Real Estate<br>\nDevelopers Association about the fate of housing estates financed<br>\nby the dissolved banks.<\/p>\n<p>He guaranteed that any bank, including state-owned Bank<br>\nTabungan Negara (BTN), would be willing to take over the housing<br>\nprojects as long as they had necessary documentation.<\/p>\n<p>\"I don't think BTN would mind taking over the housing loans as<br>\nlong as the financed houses meet all requirements,\" Akbar said.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of people have picketed BHS and Bank Guna for several<br>\ndays following the closure of the banks Saturday, demanding<br>\nclarification on their loans.<\/p>\n<p>BTN credit director Siswanto told Antara yesterday that his<br>\nbank was ready to take over for the liquidated banks in handling<br>\nthe loans for low-cost housing.<\/p>\n<p>\"We're ready to replace those banks provided that we get a<br>\nmandate from Bank Indonesia (the central bank),\" Siswanto said.<br>\n(amd\/rid)<\/p>",
