Banking secrecy under trial<\/p>\n
Big businesspeople and key government officials with money
\nkept in local banks are, at present, gripped by feelings of
\ndiscomfort. The problem is, a private national bank has been
\naccused of leaking accounts in the name of Attorney General Andi
\nGhalib and his wife.<\/p>\n
Irrespective of whether this accusation is true, this case
\nmakes a bad precedent in our national banking business since it
\nwill cause other account holders to hesitate to keep their money
\nin a domestic bank. They will, instead, be tempted to look to
\nforeign banks as an alternative that they might consider to be
\nsafer.<\/p>\n
It is the duty of Bank Indonesia as supervisor and custodian
\nof the banking business in this country to investigate the matter
\nthoroughly and then make the findings public so that charges of
\nleaking can be proven.<\/p>\n
We support the government's efforts to continue to enforce the
\nexisting regulations that commit banks to protect the
\nconfidentiality of their clients' accounts. However, it would be
\nadvisable that a law on money laundering be put into effect to
\nhelp uncover cases of high-level corruption. Banks, after all,
\nare financial institutions that are vulnerable to illicit
\ntransactions on both domestic and international scales.<\/p>\n
