Bank workers, pedestrian shot in armed robbery<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two bank employees and a pedestrian were shot
\nduring an armed robbery in the parking lot of Harapan Kita
\nHospital in West Jakarta yesterday morning.<\/p>\n
The robbers seized a briefcase containing Rp 5 million
\n(US$770) cash which was being delivered to a Bank Central Asia
\n(BCA) branch office at the hospital, said City Police spokesman
\nLt. Col. E. Aritonang.<\/p>\n
Witnesses claim that there were at least six robbers involved
\nin the incident.<\/p>\n
\"The identities of the robbers are not yet clear. But we'll
\nget some clues from the results of the forensic examination on
\nthe evidence found at the scene,\" Aritonang told reporters.<\/p>\n
He said five bullet cases, two projectiles and a magazine were
\nfound at the scene.<\/p>\n
Aritonang, however, refused to comment on the types of guns
\nbelieved to be used by the criminals.<\/p>\n
\"I won't say anything about the types of the guns or the
\ncalibers of the bullets, not until the examination results are
\nknown,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Indonesian law prohibits civilians to own and carry firearms.<\/p>\n
Police identified the three victims, who were being treated at
\nPelni Hospital in Tanah Abang, West Jakarta, as Sujatno, 40,
\nWagimin, 50, and Sudarmin, 49.<\/p>\n
Sujatno and Wagimin, both employed by BCA, are respectively a
\ndriver and a security guard.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the two, along with two other bank employees
\nnamed Lina, 25, and Merry, 24, drove into the hospital parking
\nlot at 8:40 a.m. from another nearby BCA branch office at
\nTarumanegara University.<\/p>\n
Tug-of-war<\/p>\n
The robbery occurred just after the employees had handed the
\nbriefcase to a security guard of the bank's hospital branch
\noffice and were ready to get back inside their car, said
\nAritonang.<\/p>\n
\"A man on a motorcycle approached Catur (the security guard)
\nand grabbed the case from him,\" Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
Before the robber could take the briefcase, the two were
\nbriefly involved in a tug-of-war, he added.<\/p>\n
\"Realizing that it was a robbery, Wagimin and Sujatno turned
\nto help Catur but were shot by other robbers riding in on three
\nmotorcycles,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Wagimin was shot in the abdomen and one of his thighs, while
\nSujatno was hit in one of his thighs and feet, he said.<\/p>\n
Separately, Sujatno told ANteve that the incident happened
\nvery quickly and it was impossible to defend himself.<\/p>\n
\"We had just handed over the case to a security officer of the
\nbranch (Catur) and were ready to leave the parking lot. I was
\nstanding near one of the car's back doors when a man suddenly
\ncame over and shot me.<\/p>\n
\"The man said nothing. He just shot me twice. He then shot
\nWagimin inside the car when he tried to pull out his gun,\" said
\nSujatno.<\/p>\n
He also said that there were at least two people trying to
\ntake the bag from Catur.<\/p>\n
Catur reported that he could not do much to stop the robbers.<\/p>\n
\"I tried to hold on to the case. But I lost my grip when I saw
\nanother robber shoot the people in the car,\" he told the private
\ntelevision station.<\/p>\n
Catur said he only had the chance to hit the suspect who had
\ngrabbed the case from him in the head.<\/p>\n
\"I remembered one of the robbers was wearing sunglasses and
\nanother one was a tall, big man. They were each riding a
\nmotorcycle,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said one of the robbers fired some shots into the
\nair and the surrounding area as he and the other robbers escaped
\nwith the case.<\/p>\n
\"Two of the shots apparently hit Sudarmin (the pedestrian) who
\nwas walking toward the hospital building. He was shot in both of
\nhis arms,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The speed and violence of the robbery reportedly stunned
\nwitnesses who could do little to stop the crime.<\/p>\n
According to Wagimin's wife, Sri Rejeki, cash deliveries
\nbetween the two branches were common.<\/p>\n
\"This is not the first time my husband was assigned to guard
\nsuch a delivery. I don't understand why it could be like this,\"
\nthe mother of four told reporters at Pelni Hospital.<\/p>\n
She said her husband, a retired Army chief sergeant, had been
\na security officer at the bank for seven months.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said the case was being investigated by the West
\nJakarta Police Precinct.<\/p>\n
Under Article 365 of the Criminal Code, the robbers, if
\ncaught, could face a maximum 12 years in jail if found guilty of
\nrobbing and assaulting the victims. (cst)<\/p>",
