        "content": "<p>Bank Indonesia foreign reserves up<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Bank Indonesia (BI) announced yesterday that its<br>\nnet international reserves (NIR) as of May 22 totaled US$14.69<br>\nbillion, an increase of $58.5 million against the previous week's<br>\nlevel of $14.63 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank said in a statement that with the increase,<br>\nthe NIR position was higher than the minimum level allowed by the<br>\nIMF.<\/p>\n<p>BI also said that its gross foreign assets as of May 22<br>\ntotaled $19.10 billion or a slight increase against the position<br>\nof the previous week's level of $19.04 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The increase resulted mainly from investments in foreign notes<br>\nand a larger amount of export claims, the bank added.<\/p>\n<p>BI's net domestic assets (NDA) were valued at minus Rp 32.58<br>\ntrillion (US$3.10 billion) as of May 22, indicating a monetary<br>\ncontraction of Rp 1.77 trillion against the previous week's<br>\nlevel.<\/p>\n<p>The central bank said that the contraction was caused by open<br>\nmarket operations, net claims on the government, and increasing<br>\nnet claims on IBRA (Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency) and<br>\ncredit liquidity.<\/p>\n<p>The May 22 level was still within the maximum limits allowed<br>\nby the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the bank said.<\/p>\n<p>An open market operation which was mainly done through the<br>\nselling of Bank Indonesia's short-term promissory notes (SBIs)<br>\nand rupiah intervention resulted in a significant contraction of<br>\nRp 9.40 trillion compared to the previous week's level, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The contraction sent the net position of the open market<br>\noperation as of May 22 to a negative Rp 43.26 trillion.<\/p>\n<p>BI's net claim on the government during the same period<br>\ncontributed to a contraction of Rp 6.04 trillion causing a<br>\nnegative of Rp 37.82 trillion, the bank said.<\/p>\n<p>This was due to factors including tax revenue, increasing<br>\nforeign loans and oil revenue.<\/p>\n<p>BI's net claim on IBRA was Rp 102.55 trillion, an increase of<br>\n3.71 trillion compared to the previous week's level of Rp 98.84<br>\ntrillion, the central bank said.<\/p>\n<p>The increase was mainly related to the withdrawal of<br>\ndepositors' money from closed down banks and other banks outside<br>\nthose supervised by IBRA.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of liquidity injection for banks which were not<br>\nsupervised by IBRA also increased significantly due to large<br>\nwithdrawals by depositors following the recent political unrest,<br>\nthe bank said.<\/p>\n<p>BI also said that the reserve money as of May 22 reached Rp<br>\n70.26 trillion, a decline of Rp 1.36 trillion compared to the<br>\nprevious week's level.<\/p>\n<p>The decline was reflected in an increase in paper and coin<br>\nmoney in circulation by Rp 3.22 trillion to reach Rp 46.58<br>\ntrillion, which was due to the recent rioting.
