Bank employees consult legislature<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Delegates of some 800 employees of
\nliquidated banks went on Tuesday to the legislature here,
\nrejecting the application of the severance pay regulations in
\ntheir case.<\/p>\n
Spokesman Hotman Manurung told legislature members that the
\n1996 rule of the Ministry of Manpower is only relevant to
\ndismissed employees while in the current case thousands of
\nemployees lost their jobs because of a government decision.<\/p>\n
"We are really confused. We might have to start farming to
\nsupport our families," Dana Barus, an employee said.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta bank employees have also demanded severance pay
\nseveral times the amount justified in the 1996 rule which they
\nsay is too low.<\/p>\n
Legislature members Azis Angkat and Zaki Abdullah said they
\nagreed, but urged bank employees to continue to serve customers.
\nMany employees have refused to work until the severance pay and
\ncompensation issue is settled. (21)<\/p>",
