Indonesian cybersecurity experts have reassured the public that the banking sector maintains robust security measures despite recent data breach rumours, emphasising that leaks may stem from third-party systems rather than core banks. They advised against panic over dark web data, noting that regulatory oversight by OJK, Bank Indonesia, and other bodies ensures stringent protocols. Experts urged citizens to safeguard personal information and verify all digital requests to prevent cybercrime.

Generally, Indonesia’s banking sector has one of the strongest
security systems, especially in large banks. This was stated by digital
expert Syahraki Syahrir in response to recent data breach rumours
implicating several banking institutions, which have caused public
concern.

Syahraki, also CEO of Veda Praxis, a digital and cybersecurity
consultancy firm, explained that the banking sector is the most mature
industry in managing information technology (IT) security. He noted that
Indonesian regulators have long enforced strict rules on banking
information system security.

According to the man commonly known as Raki, financial industry
oversight is conducted through multiple layers by agencies such as the
Financial Services Authority (OJK), Bank Indonesia, the National Cyber
and Crypto Agency (BSSN), and the Ministry of Communication and Digital
Affairs. “All these regulators continuously enhance security standards
for banks and educate the public and industry players,” he said on
Saturday, 23 May 2026.

Regarding data leak rumours on the dark web, the public is advised
not to panic excessively. Raki explained that the dark web is an
unindexed part of the internet often used for unrestricted activities,
including spreading unverified and illegal data.

In today’s digital ecosystem, systems are interconnected with various
parties, including technology providers, infrastructure services, and
other partners, he added. Data circulating online may not necessarily
originate from core banking systems.

“If the dark web data is genuine, we must trace its source. It could
come from third parties linked to banking services, so don’t immediately
assume the banks are weak. However, when banks are implicated, public
concern spikes because people’s money is involved,” he said.

Earlier, as reported by Antara, OJK Commissioner Chairperson
Friderica Widyasari Dewi stated that while banks have layered security
systems and comply with personal data protection regulations, crimes can
still occur if customers are careless with their personal
information.

“Even with robust security measures and regulatory compliance,
financial crimes can happen if customers are not vigilant or neglect to
safeguard their personal data,” she said.

Known as Kiki, she added that cybercrime risks in the financial
sector are rising due to increasingly sophisticated criminals, while
many citizens lack adequate digital and financial literacy.

In response, Raki said the rise in cybercrime is a consequence of
more complex digital technology use in daily life. He urged the public
to remain vigilant online, such as not sharing personal information via
phone calls, instant messages, or other digital media—even with those
claiming to be from banks.

“Never share passwords, PINs, or OTPs with anyone. If someone
requests sensitive data via phone or digital messages, be immediately
cautious,” he said.

Most importantly, Raki stressed the need to cultivate a culture of
caution in daily digital activities. He advised verifying information or
requests through digital channels before trusting them. “In today’s era,
we must be extra careful. Do not easily believe phone calls, messages,
or links claiming to be from any entity, including banks. If in doubt,
conduct transactions and communications through official apps or visit
branch offices directly,” he said.
",
