Banjarmasin braces for flood<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Provincial natural disaster
\ncoordinating units here are bracing for floods which are
\npredicted to come soon as the La Nia wet weather phenomenon
\nsettles in next month.<\/p>\n
Head of the provincial natural disaster coordinating unit
\n(Satkorlak PB) Bachtiar Murad said Saturday the province had
\nprepared over 10,000 sandbags to anticipate the breaching of
\nseveral dams in the area.<\/p>\n
\"According to predictions we have received, areas to be hit by
\nflood will be Banjarmasin, Batulicin in Kotabaru regency and the
\nBanua Lima region,\" Murad, who is also a deputy governor, said as
\nquoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
He said the provincial administration was also urging
\nresidents to heed calls to keep rivers and waterways clear as
\nways to avert flood.<\/p>\n
\"We are very concerned that many rivers are just becoming too
\nshallow and shrinking as more and more settlements are being
\ndeveloped along riversides. It has made us prone to flood,\" he
