Banjar closes schools due to flooding<\/p>\n

Authorities in the South Kalimantan regency of Banjar closed
\nseveral schools on Tuesday due to severe flooding in the area.<\/p>\n
Water has reached 30 to 100 centimeters deep in five districts
\nin the regency over the past few days.<\/p>\n
\"The schools have been closed in order to protect the students
\nfrom the floods,\" said Banjar administration spokesman Syahda
\nMariadi as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n
He said the schools that had been closed included 10
\nelementary schools in Jingah Habang subdistrict and one junior
\nhigh school.<\/p>\n
In some places, the schools were flooded in water almost one
\nmeter deep, as was the case with Tunggulirang elementary school
\nin Martapura district, he said.<\/p>\n
On Monday, Banjar Regent Rudy Arifin said the regental
\nadministration would provide aid to the victims of the floods,
\nsuch as public kitchens, makeshift tents and relief centers in
\nareas hit by the floods.<\/p>\n
It would also distribute rice seeds to farmers whose paddy
\nfields were swept away by floodwaters, he added.<\/p>\n
\"We have allocated funds from the regency budget to deal with
\nthe natural disaster. We will use those funds to allay the misery
\nof the flood victims,\" said Rudy.<\/p>\n
The Banjar administration has allocated Rp 700 million
\n(US$82,353) this year toward natural disaster management.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Syahda said the schools would reopen \"when the
\nflood has subsided and is no longer a threat to the students\".<\/p>",
