Bandung workers protest dismissals<\/p>\n
BANDUNG: At least 2,000 employees of garment manufacturer PT
\nKH Fortune Garmen Majalaya, located in the Bandung regency,
\nrallied at the provincial council office on Monday to protest the
\ndismissal of their colleagues.<\/p>\n
The spokesman for the protesters, Rusman Effendi, said they
\nwere demanding the councillors meet with the company's management
\nand workers' representatives to discuss the dismissals and what
\nthey said was the unfair compensation the dismissed workers
\nreceived.<\/p>\n
Rusman said the company recently fired 250 workers, giving
\neach dismissed worker Rp 286,000 in severance pay, or the
\nequivalent of one month's salary.<\/p>\n
He said the workers were demanding severance packages equal to
\nsix month's salary.<\/p>\n
Effendi added that the company would soon fire another 300
\nworkers, reportedly to cut costs.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the Council's Commission E for public welfare,
\nRuchiyat Noor, promised to hold a meeting on Wednesday with the
\ncompany's management to relay the protesters' demands.(25\/lup)<\/p>",
