Bandung water contaminated<\/p>\n
BOGOR, West Java: Bandung faces not only depletion of its
\nground water, but contamination as well, an expert at the Bogor
\nInstitute of Agriculture, warned.<\/p>\n
Komarsa G., a staff lecturer at the institute, said a recent
\nstudy showed the alarming degradation of the quantity and quality
\nof the water supply in Bandung, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Given the trend, Komarsa fears there will soon be a critical
\nshortage of clean water in the West Java capital.<\/p>\n
He proposed the reactivation of the agency to monitor the
\nexploitation of ground water resources.<\/p>\n
Komarsa said contamination by nitrogen and chloride occurred
\nprimarily in the city's center and residential areas. The source
\nof contamination is a combination of improper discharge of
\nsewerage, industrial waste and trash.<\/p>\n
He said the level of the ground water has also fallen, in some
\ncases as deep as 20 meters from the surface because of over
