Many foreigners in Jakarta complain about the rampant
\nhooliganism. Japanese and Korean entrepreneurs
\nreport extortion and other crimes to the police. Vendors in Tanah
\nAbang, nearby discotheques, and other entertainment centers are
\nregular and easy targets of extortionists.<\/p>\n
Hooligans also spread nails on roads to puncture tires. Then
\nthe gangs help change the tire but later demand a large amount of
\nmoney. Bus drivers must pay illegal fees and certain developers
\nemploy gangs to threaten land owners who won't sell their land
\nfor below market price. The developers are backed by powerful
\npersons. All sorts of banditry, including rape, happen in the
\ncity everyday.<\/p>\n
What does all this mean? Perhaps similar misconduct happens in
\ncities like Medan, Bandung, Semarang and Surabaya. Here, the
\nthugs have divided the city into several fiefdoms, each under the
\njurisdiction of an individual gang. Each area's boss collects the
\nmoney raked in by his subordinates.<\/p>\n
Who is the next victim?<\/p>\n
Something must surely be done to make Jakarta safer.<\/p>\n
