Ban on import

The Department of Industry and Commerce seems to have made
\nevery effort to ban the importation of used clothes into the
\ncountry. They have even burned bales of imported secondhand
\nclothes recently, arguing that they were potentially contaminated
\nwith Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which is currently
\nsweeping some Asian countries.<\/p>\n
The government has argued that the importation of used clothes
\nwas illegal and detrimental to the domestic garment industry, and
\nwarned that imported used clothes could be contaminated with
\nSARS, even without conducting any laboratory tests.<\/p>\n
Whatever the reasons may be, in my opinion, we are now
\nwitnessing a bizarre policy imposed by the government. If they
\nclaim that the importation of used clothes is illegal and harmful
\nto the domestic textile industry, why have they just started
\nfussing about it only recently? There must be something wrong
\nwith our customs officers. And why has the government let it go
\non this long? They should have taken action years ago.<\/p>\n
Has the government thought about what the effects of the ban
\nwill be on the many people whose livelihood depends on the
\nbusiness? Has the government thought about providing them with a
\nnew job when they are put out of business? To what extent has the
\ngovernment ever cared about or focused attention on ordinary
\npeople? The workers in this line of business are creative and
\nhard-working people who are doing their best to feed their
\nfamilies.<\/p>\n
