Ban on demonstrations<\/p>\n
A law on demonstrations has not been devised, but in West Java
\nall forms of street demonstrations are banned. The regional
\nmilitary command has taken stern measures against such actions.<\/p>\n
The West Java Military Commander has banned all street
\ndemonstrations for fear that they could lead to rioting and
\nviolence. According to the commander, aspirations should be
\nchanneled through the right institution. He apparently doesn't
\nwant the recent Medan demonstrations-turned-riots to be repeated
\nin Bandung.<\/p>\n
As expected, the ban has prompted reactions. Some dismiss it
\nas arrogance from the powers that be, which is contrary to the
\natmosphere of openness. Others consider the measure appropriate
\nand logical, because it is not only for the sake of security but
\nalso serves social-political interests.<\/p>\n
In this context, both sides should adopt a mature attitude.
\nThe demonstrators, on the one hand, should do everything to avoid
\nbeing dragged into violence, and the authorities, on the other,
\nshould avoid using harsh measures when dealing with
\ndemonstrators.<\/p>\n
