Jakarta (ANTARA) - Member of Commission III of the Indonesian House\nof Representatives (DPR RI) Bambang Soesatyo expressed his support for\nPresident Prabowo Subianto\u2019s idea of overhauling the political system,\nspecifically transforming elections from being high-cost and\ntransactional into something more substantive.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe point is, on various occasions \u2014 the last I recall was at Sentul\n\u2014 President Prabowo said that we must overhaul the political system. To\nmake it substantive, not like today, which is transactional and brutal,\u201d\nsaid Bamsoet, as he is commonly known, answering reporters\u2019 questions in\nJakarta on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He said the overhaul would also address the issue of widespread\ncorruption cases linked to the high-cost electoral system. Furthermore,\nBamsoet noted that restructuring the political system is permitted under\nthe law, and the process would be discussed at the parliamentary level\nwith the government.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe high-cost elections are causing corruption everywhere. I don\u2019t\nknow where we should start this restructuring, but what is certain is\nthat the political system overhaul is governed by law, and it falls\nunder the DPR\u2019s authority to discuss it with the government,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Previously, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of\noverhauling the political system regarding the high cost of elections so\nas not to burden the state budget. Prabowo made the remarks in his\nspeech at the 60th anniversary celebration of the Golkar Party at the\nSentul International Convention Center (SICC) in Bogor Regency, West\nJava, on December 12, 2025.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe all feel that there are some things in the democracy we practice\nthat we need to fix together. In my view, we must fix the system, and we\nshould not be ashamed to acknowledge that this system is possibly too\nexpensive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Prabowo called on all party chairpersons and political party leaders\nin attendance to reform the political system that spends tens of\ntrillions in just one or two days every time an election is held.<\/p>\n
\u201cI see that our neighboring countries are efficient. Malaysia,\nSingapore, India \u2014 you vote once for local council members, and then\nthose council members elect the governor and the regent.
