Balinese protest against WWF<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Around 100 people from the Desa Adat
\n(customary village) in Tanjung Benoa staged a protest at the
\nWorldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) Wallacea Bio-Region office here
\non Saturday, demanding the government revoke the anti-turtle
\npoaching regulation.<\/p>\n
The protesters also demanded that the WWF come up with
\nalternative sources of incomes for former turtle hunters.<\/p>\n
They also accused the WWF and other environmental NGOs of
\npushing the government to conduct the recent raids and seizures
\nof several turtle-poaching boats in Bali and Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
\"We were granted a quota of 5,000 turtles a year by the late
\ngovernor IB Mantra. It was decreased to 3,200 turtles a year
\nunder governor IB Oka. And now it has totally disappeared. We
\nwant the quota back,\" said the head of the Tanjung Benoa Desa
\nAdat AA Gde Asrama said.<\/p>\n
The WWF strategy leader for the sea turtle campaign, Ngurah
\nMahardika, told the protesters that his organization was ready
\nfor any dialogue on the development of alternative sources of
\nincome for former turtle hunters.<\/p>\n
\"In fact, the WWF is conducting a participatory mapping on the
\nvillage's resources and potential to determine the most
\nappropriate alternative sources of income,\" he said. -- JP<\/p>",
