Balinese monkeys getting nasty<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali (JP): The ubiquitous monkeys of the tourist
\nresort of Sangeh are getting nasty, blemishing their image with
\npetty crimes.<\/p>\n
Many of them are past masters of snatching tourists' purses,
\nhandbags, wrist watches, necklaces, hats and sunglasses.<\/p>\n
They will calmly hoard their loot in the trees until food
\nvendors help dumbfounded tourists get back their property with
\nfruit or peanuts sold at inflated prices.<\/p>\n
\"They must be in it together,\" sniffed a tourist from Bandung
\nwho had his thumb bitten by a monkey that failed to snatch his
\nwrist watch last Sunday.<\/p>\n
Embarrassed by complaints about the annoying animals, Badung
\nregent Gusti Alit Putra called for a competition last year to
\ntame the monkeys. Nobody has taken up the challenge so far.<\/p>\n
Sangeh village chief Wayan Maka has come out in defense of the
\nanimals' rights.<\/p>\n
\"If they are not provoked, they won't do anything,\" he said.
\n\"They are just like us... They have pride they will fiercely
\ndefend. So don't hurt their feelings,\" he advised. (23\/pan)<\/p>",
