Balinese continue protests at slur<\/p>\n
DENPASAR: Thousands of Balinese Hindus in Jembrana regency
\nprayed on Tuesday for the nation's leaders to have a clear
\nconscience in settling the alleged slur on their religion by
\nCabinet minister A.M. Saefuddin.<\/p>\n
Antara reported that those attending the prayer at the
\nJagatnatha temple included private employees, civil servants and
\npublic transport drivers and villagers from 59 villages in the
\nregency.<\/p>\n
They later proceeded to the local legislature office (DPRD) to
\nvoice their concern over the statement of the food and
\nhorticulture minister. Three weeks ago Saefuddin stated he was a
\nbetter presidential candidate than popular Megawati Soekarnoputri
\nof the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI) because he was a Moslem
\nand Megawati was a \"Hindu\".<\/p>\n
Saefuddin has apologized more than once, but the predominantly
\nHindu Balinese want him sacked while some Moslems have insisted
\nan apology should be enough. The ritual was led by Dwipa Wiyasa,
\nthe chairman of the Jembrana chapter of the Association of
\nIndonesian Hindus (PHDI), who later read their demand at the
\nlegislature office before Regent Ida Bagus Indugosa and DPRD
