        "content": "<p>Balinese Computer Font<\/p>\n<p>I am writing to express my gratitude to I Made Suatjana and  I<br>\nGusti Ngurah Sutjaja, who have brought the Balinese<br>\nscript into the computer age (The Jakarta Post, Sept. 16).<\/p>\n<p>As a Balinese, I learned how to read and write in the<br>\ntraditional Balinese script at school and I know how dull and<br>\nboring the learning materials are.<\/p>\n<p>The Balinese Computer Font, the brainchild of Suatjana, eases<br>\nthe process of writing and publishing new materials in Balinese,<br>\nand will thus trigger the creation of contemporary articles and<br>\nshort stories, or perhaps even interactive computer games and<br>\ntools that can be used to replace existing learning materials.<\/p>\n<p>Students will start to enjoy studying the Balinese script,<br>\nwhich will result in increased proficiency levels and ensure it<br>\nwill not be forgotten by future generations.<\/p>\n<p>I would also like to inform readers of the Post about another<br>\nrelated endeavor that is taking place: The Balinese Encoding<br>\nproject has been working to enhance the capabilities of the<br>\nBalinese Computer Font.<\/p>\n<p>The current version of the font application lacks a basic<br>\nelement known as the \"coded character set\" and the adoption of<br>\nthe Unicode standard (http:\/\/www.unicode.org) is being planned to<br>\nprovide the encoded character set for Balinese script.<br>\nWithout an encoded character set, the font can't be processed<br>\nproperly by the computer, and the computerization of the Balinese<br>\nscript will be complete only after the encoded character set has<br>\nbeen composed and accepted by the Unicode Consortium.<\/p>\n<p>The project team comprises computer scientists, linguists and<br>\nfont designers, including Suatjana himself.<\/p>\n<p>If you are interested in giving suggestions, helping out or<br>\nsimply want to know more, please visit our website at<br>\n(http:\/\/www.babadbali.com\/aksarabali\/aksara_bali.htm) to check<br>\nout detailed activities of this project.<\/p>\n<p>IDA BAGUS ADI SUDEWA, Denpasar<\/p>",
