Balinese children abducted and killed by pedophiles: Australian report<\/p>\n

Hundreds of Balinese children are feared to have been abused and
\nabducted, and some even killed, by pedophiles belonging to a
\nchild sex network operating in the Indonesian resort island, an
\ninvestigation by The Australian newspaper alleged on Monday.<\/p>\n
The report quoted an Australian expatriate, Gloria Goodwin who
\nruns the Crisis Care Foundation in the island's north, as saying
\nchildren had been drugged, had gone missing or had been found
\ndead.<\/p>\n
Non-governmental agencies working in Bali had reported the
\nallegations to Interpol while the U.S. Department of Homeland
\nSecurity is also understood to be investigating \"criminal
\nactivities\" on the island after a tip-off.<\/p>\n
The latest allegations follow a report by Australian child
\nadvocacy group Child Wise gave to the government last week which
\nsaid pedophile rings of Australians, Americans and Europeans were
\noperating largely undetected on the Indonesian island.<\/p>\n
The Child Wise report has not been made public due to the
\nexplicit nature of its contents.<\/p>\n
Child Wise told AFP children on Bali's streets had reported
\nnetworks of thousands of foreign men preying on them, working
\ntogether and sharing the children.<\/p>\n
\"There is a village ... where three children died apparently
\nfrom sexual abuse and sodomy,\" the Child Wise report said.
\n\"Apparently money changed hands and nothing came of the
\ninvestigation.\"<\/p>\n
The newspaper quoted the report as saying that of the 80
\nchildren who were missing in the island's north, some were said
\nto have been killed \"by one man in a sexual frenzy and buried in
\na cave.\"<\/p>\n
Some 80 children were said to be missing from an area
\nsurrounding the village of Karangasem while other locals said
\nchildren had been abducted as they slept in their beds or walked
\nhome from school.<\/p>\n
Professor Luh Ketut Suryani, chairwoman for Bali's Committee
\nAgainst Sexual Abuse, raised the claims last week with Bali
\npolice chief I Made Mangku Pastika, the newspaper said.<\/p>\n
Suryani will travel to Karangasem later this month to teach
\nthe villagers about how pedophiles operate.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, officials said in Canberra on Monday that Australia
\nwill station a police officer on the Indonesian island of Bali
\nfrom this month to help crack down on a growing number of
\ntourists heading there to have sex with minors.<\/p>\n
The move comes amid reports that paedophiles were also
\nadopting or fostering poverty-stricken children from Bali which
\nis struggling to rebuild its economy and tourism after nightclub
\nbombings in October 2002 killed over 200 people, mainly
\nforeigners.<\/p>\n
Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Mick Keelty said
\nan officer -- appointed with Jakarta's permission -- would target
\nchild abuse by wealthy foreigners, many of whom are Australian.<\/p>\n
\"The biggest priority he will have, outside terrorism and
\nprosecutions for the Bali bombings, is child sex tourism,\" Keelty
\ntold a parliamentary committee.<\/p>\n
AFP acting deputy commissioner John Lawler said the officer
\nwould also investigate reports of children being abused after
\nbeing adopted or fostered by foreigners on the tropical island.
\n\"We're aware of circumstances where it occurred,\" he said.<\/p>\n
While child sex tourism is widespread across Southeast Asia,
\nthe extent of the problem in Bali only hit the spotlight in
\nAustralia last month with the arrest of former diplomat, William
\nBrown, 51, who is now awaiting trial there on charges of sexually
\nabusing two Balinese boys, aged 13 and 15.<\/p>",
