Bali wants special status<\/p>\n
DENPASAR, Bali: Community leaders have urged the province's
\nnewly elected regional representatives to the People's
\nConsultative Assembly to seek special status for the province be
\ngranted.<\/p>\n
Nyoman Gelebet, a lecturer of the technical school of Udayana
\nUniversity, urged the representatives during a meeting here on
\nSaturday to push for the special status during the Assembly's
\ndeliberations in Jakarta.<\/p>\n
A similar recommendation was also forwarded by Denpasar
\nNational University rector I Gusti Ngurah Gorda, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The provinces of Aceh and Yogyakarta are the only two which
\nhave been granted special status.<\/p>\n
One of the main reasons for the proposal is financial.<\/p>\n
Bali faces a dilemma in its provincial budget. It earns little
\nfrom natural resources, which could be claimed in a profit
\nsharing arrangement with the central government. Most of Bali's
\nincome is derived from its huge tourist industry.<\/p>\n
Saturday's meeting was held to allow the five representatives
\n-- Ida Bagus Adnyana Manuaba, Dewa Gede Palguna, I Gde Sudibya, I
\nGusti Wayan Meregeg and I Gusti Bagus Masri -- to take stock of
\nvarious political and economic proposals for the province. (06)<\/p>",
