Bali voted 'best island'<\/p>\n

Still reeling from the deadly terrorist attacks last October,
\nBali, Indonesia's prime tourist destination, has been voted as
\nthe world's best island by New York-based travel magazine Travel
\n+ Leisure.<\/p>\n
The Great Barrier Reef islands in Australia and Santorini in
\nGreece were named second and third respectively behind Bali,
\nwhich won for a third straight year.<\/p>\n
The Four Seasons Hotel in Jimbaran, Bali, was voted the second
\nbest hotel in Asia, after the Hotel Peninsula in Bangkok, while
\nThe Ritz-Carlton Spa in Bali won the best spa in the world.<\/p>\n
The awards are expected to revive the tourism industry in
\nBali, which is still struggling to recover from the deadly
\nterrorist attacks that killed at least 202 people and injured
\nabout 350 others, mostly foreigners on Oct. 12, 2002.<\/p>\n
The bombings, believed to be the biggest terrorist attack
\nsince the September 11 attacks in the United States,
\nsignificantly reduced the number of foreign tourists visiting
\nBali in particular, and Indonesia in general.<\/p>\n
Travel + Leisure's editor-in-chief Nancy Novogrod handed over
\nthe award to Indonesian General Consulate representative in New
\nYork Kristio Wahyono during the 8th Annual World's Best Awards in
\nNew York last Thursday.<\/p>\n
The award is a glamorous event attended by leading players in
\nthe tourism industry, including hotels, airlines and restaurants.<\/p>\n
The award was based on polling of the magazine's readers.<\/p>\n
Travel + Leisure magazine focuses on international tourism and
\nserves as a \"guide book\" for international travelers and world
\ntravel agents.<\/p>\n
Sydney in Australia was named the best tourist destination
\ncity in the world.<\/p>\n
In the airline industry, Singapore Airlines maintained its
\nposition as the favorite airline, followed by Cathay Pacific and
\nVirgin Atlantic.<\/p>",
