Bali to control cat and dog population<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Officials in Bali plan to control the population
\nof cats and dogs in response to foreign visitors' complaints that
\nislanders neglect the animals.<\/p>\n
Head of the Animal Husbandry Office I Wayan Masudana says the
\nprovincial government has received letters from animal lovers,
\nparticularly from Britain and the United States, objecting to the
\nway the Balinese treat cats and dogs.<\/p>\n
The complainants said the two animals deserve better
\ntreatment, Wayan told Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
Stray cats and dogs are common in Denpasar and other tourist
\nresorts on the island. The sight of them appears to have upset
\nmany Western visitors.<\/p>\n
\"Their complaints are valid,\" Wayan acknowledged.<\/p>\n
He explained, however, that Indonesians in general, and the
\nBalinese in particular, are not attached to animals to the same
\nextent as people in the West. Most Indonesians simply don't feel
\nany responsibility to take care of dogs or cats.<\/p>\n
\"The few people who have cats and dogs as pets are rich,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Wayan said the Bali provincial government is planning to bring
\nthe two animals' population under control and will appeal to
\npeople to keep cats and dogs as pets.<\/p>\n
Many villagers have taken the initiative and pay people to
\ncatch stray cats and dogs. But they do not know what to do with
\nthe animals because no one is willing to take them, not even for
