President Prabowo Subianto has proposed establishing a special financial centre in Bali to position Indonesia as a safe haven for global investors amid escalating geopolitical tensions, highlighting the island's appeal as evidenced by the influx of Russians and Ukrainians fleeing conflict. The initiative, suggested by National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, aims to attract funds previously earmarked for the Middle East by leveraging Indonesia's geographic isolation, natural resources, and neutral foreign policy. This move aligns with broader efforts to decentralise economic growth beyond Java, including the development of the new capital Nusantara in East Kalimantan, to address regional inequalities and boost national GDP contributions from outer islands.",

Bali province, well-known for its culture
and tourism, is being considered as a suitable option.

In his speech at a government working meeting in Jakarta on
Wednesday, April 8, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto, explained that he
reflected on data saying that Indonesia is among the safest nations if
World War III happens.

“You know, the data is out now: if a Third World War breaks out,
which countries would be safe? Well, Indonesia ranks among the top,”
Prabowo said.

“Now, if you go to Bali, you’ll see how many Russians are there, how
many Ukrainians are there,” he continued, noting people reside in Bali
amid the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Prabowo said the idea has been proposed by the Chairman of the
National Economic Council (DEN), Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, for years.
Luhut considered Bali as one of the most suitable locations.

“We have plan to create a special financial center. We are currently
looking for a location, and Mr. Luhut has suggested Bali,” Prabowo
said.

Prabowo assessed that the proposal is now increasingly relevant to
realize, as he described Indonesia as one of the most attractive
countries for global investors. He hopes the special financial center
could attract investors who had previously planned to invest in the
Middle East but reconsidered due to rising tensions in the region.

“It turns out that now the funds that were in the Middle East—where
(are these investors) going to take them, ladies and gentlemen? Which
countries are not at war right now? Think about it. Indonesia is one of
the most sought-after (destination),” he claimed.

Various mainstream media outlets in Indonesia often cite the country
as one of the safest countries during times of global conflict. Its
geographic position, far from major conflict zones and spread across a
vast archipelago, along with its abundant natural resources and its
long-standing “free and active” foreign policy, are frequently mentioned
as reasons.

Meanwhile, the Indonesian government is currently developing new
economic centers outside the island of Java to reduce economic
inequality across the country. To date, Statistics Indonesia records
that Java contributes more than 58% of the nation’s GDP.

One of the major initiatives underway is the relocation of
Indonesia’s capital to Nusantara, a planned city in East Kalimantan.
Although it was initially built to serve as a new administrative center,
the government hopes the city will also drive economic growth outside
Java, including in eastern Indonesia.

“Nusantara is expected to become a catalyst for the growth of new
economic centers on Kalimantan Island and in eastern Indonesia in
general,” Director of Communication,Information and Economic Maritime of
Communication and Information Ministry in 2023, Septriana Tangkary, as
quoted from the ministry’s media arm Info Publik.

Kata Kunci / Tags

News Recomendation

Loading latest news…..
",
